CHAPTER 17

April 15, 2024.

“Tara?” Timo asked from across the table. His aim switching from the Sheriff to the Judge. Kelli and Cierra had sidestepped and turned to face the men behind us. The Cardinal and both Deacons had moved to the far side of the room trying to get out of the crossfire and Eddy had them covered. By the looks on their faces, they knew that if the shooting started, nowhere would be safe and very few people would leave here alive.

“Lower your weapons!” Judge Robertson barked. “All of you!” he reached out and put his hand on the Sheriffs rifle and pushed the barrel toward the floor. “You’re a difficult person to track down, Miss Sterling,” he said in a lower voice and stepped forward.

“I’ve heard that before,” I replied tightlipped. The sights of my forty-five were centered right between his eyes.

“My apologies for the dramatic entrance. I just couldn’t risk letting you slip through my fingers again. I hope you understand,” he removed the black felt cowboy hat from his head and ran his fingers through his thinning hair. I just stared at him through my sights. The trio of armed men with him had lowered their guns which led me to believe his men behind me had done the same. I wasn’t about to take my eyes off of him to look.

“What are we doing here, Judge? One wrong move and a bunch of folks ain’t leavin here upright or with heartbeats,” I snarled.

“Miss Sterling, look around. You’re the only ones who haven’t lowered their weapons.”

“That may be, but who said I trust you enough to believe you?”

“I don’t care if you trust me or not,” he chuckled. “Thing is, if we were here to kill you, we’d already be identifying your bodies,” he took another step forward and motioned to the bench at the table. “May I?”

“Suit yourself,” the barrel of my forty-five tracked his every movement.

“Would it sooth you a little if I asked the Sheriff to remove his men?” he asked after he sat down.

“Whatever makes you feel better.”

“Fine. Sheriff?”

“Yes, sir?”

“Tell your men to wait out front and then park your butt on that bench right there,” he pointed to the empty bench across from him. Trevor did as he’d been instructed and sat after the last man left, closing the door behind him.

“Now what?” I asked.

“Now? Sit and finish your meal.”

“Ain’t hungry anymore.”

“As you said, suit yourself,” he cut his gaze to the Cardinal. “Any chance I can get a bowl and fork, Reverend?”

“Sure,” Viridian motioned to Weiss and then slowly moved back to his seat at the head of the table.

“You plan on keepin’ your gun on a man eating a meal?” he looked back to me.

“Eddy, Timo, keep an eye on the guys out front. Kelli, Cierra, watch the back room,” I ordered and then holstered my weapon. I took my seat again. Sitting straddle, I was able to face the Judge directly. After Weiss returned with bowls and forks for the Sheriff and the Judge, he moved to stand next to Viridian again.
